Rawdon Parish Church Presents the Hermitage Ensemble – Russian singers from St Petersburg.

Rawdon Parish Church is proud to bring the Hermitage Ensemble from St Peterburg in Russia to West Yorkshire for the first time. The superlative Russian Orthodox Choir, The Hermitage Ensemble was formed in St Petersburg in 1997 to keep alive the great traditions of Russian sacred music and folksong.

Members of the Ensemble are chosen from amongst the finest soloists includes soloists in St. Petersburg including the members of the Kirov Opera, Maly Opera Theatre and St. Petersburg Concert. Each singer has a passionate commitment to Russian music, but also an extensive repertoire that includes music written by the great classical composers of Western Europe.Their concert will include motets and liturgical settings from the Eastern Church written within the last 300 years, together with Russian folk songs that display a range of emotions and, with their rhythms and melodies, convey all that is characteristic of the great ‘Russian Soul’.

The concert takes place in the beautiful historic church of St Peter's Rawdon established in the mid 15th Century, which is situated in the picturesqe village of Rawdon near to the Leeds Bradford Airport.

The concert start at 8.00 pm.. Ticket price (£10 or £8 for limited number of earlybird tickets) includes a drink (glass of wine or similar drink of your choice ) and light refreshments. Extra Free Cultural Event  

Before the performance from 7.00pm to 7.45 pm there will be a FREE reading of the Poems of John Donne to mark his commemoration day. Readers to include Geoff Druett (former presenter on Yorkshire TV's Calendar), Martin Kelly (local actor), Dr Janet Kelly (historian) Sue Giotoni (story teller) Peter Marsh (former head teacher and educational consultant) Rev Mark Smith and Dr Angela Birkin. 

Poems will include John Donne's earlier erotic poems ,and his later Spiritual poems and meditations including among others..
The Good Morrow * The Flea * The Canonisation * Batter my heart , three person’d God * Meditation xvii from Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions (No man is an Island, entire of itself) * Death be not proud and many others. There is no charge for attending the John Donne reading.
