St Edmund's, Roundhay, north Leeds
St Edmund's is a lively church situated in a pleasant residential area of the city. The church offers a wide range of activities for all age groups. Children are especially welcome and there lots of opportunities for them to grow in faith and have fun. A parent recently told us: "St Ed's is a very welcoming family church".
The Vicar is Revd Canon David Paton-Williams, ably supported by clergy and lay assistant staff.
BBC SONGS OF PRAISE will be recording two programmes at St Edmund’s after Easter and worship is at the heart of church life. “We have three Sunday services at 8.00am, 10.00am and the evening service which is usually at 6.30pm. There is also a midweek service on Wednesdays at 11.00am in the side chapel. We also have special services which as well as the normal Christian festivals include Christingle, Environment, Harvest, Remembrance, Toy service and a Memorial service for those recently bereaved.
“The Sunday 8.00am is a quiet reflective service with no music but includes communion. On the last Sunday of a month we follow the traditional Book of Common Prayer liturgy. The Sunday 10.00am is a family service which usually includes communion. There are children’s groups in term time and 6 times a year there is a uniformed groups’ parade service.
“The Sunday evening service varies in style. The monthly rotation includes traditional sung evensong, an ecumenical service, a Taize or Celtic style service and evening prayer.”
Children’s activities at St Edmund’s play a big part in church life, ranging from baptisms (christenings) and weekday services for toddlers, to monthly bible study groups for teenagers.
“Let the little children come to me, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these” Luke 18 vs 16
St Ed’s offers weekly children’s groups during the 10am service for children age 3-14 years. There is a recently refurbished toddler area in church where families are welcome to participate in the service, and a quiet room with baby changing and feeding facilities.
Teds @St Ed’s is a monthly weekday group for pre-school children and carers and is a chance to make new friends.
We invite children in Year 3 and above to consider taking part in Communion before confirmation. We run annual confirmation preparation sessions and a monthly bible study group for high school children.
Each term we run Worship All Together services and WOW (Workshop of Worship) sessions so all the young people of the church can meet together and explore different ways of worshipping God through music, games, prayer and messy activities!
“Kids’ church is fun because you make new friends and share your news and learn songs and make lots of noise!” M, aged 6.
Music St Edmund’s has a thriving choir comprising children and adults which sings at the weekly morning services and monthly evening services. The church has a good three-manual organ and Yamaha piano and is also used regularly as a venue for concerts.
Sustainability is very important for the church, and the Green Group was set up by St Edmund’s in 2011 in response to this and the Diocesan initiative ‘Caring for God’s Earth’. The group aims to reduce the carbon footprint of St Edmund’s by taking initiatives in worship, at a practical level and by working in partnership with the local community.
The Church buildings are fascinating. St Edmund’s Church itself is just over 100 years old. It is a grade 2* listed building. The parochial hall was built first and for some years was where worship took place. The Church now seats just over 300 people and contains more than a dozen stained glass windows which were installed in the middle of the last century.
