A prayer and a blessing for BBC Look North

The vicar of Pontefract, the Revd Canon Bob Cooper, sent the BBC Look North team off on their Big 50 Sofa Challenge for Sport Relief with a prayer and a blessing this morning.   Hundreds of people turned out to cheer on presenters, Harry Gration, Amy Garcia and weatherman, Paul Hudson on their way from just outside St Giles’ Church in the market square on Day 5 of the 8 day challenge.   Volunteers had opened the church kitchen at 8am to keep the crew topped up with warm drinks before they set off to push the sofa the 10 miles from Pontefract to Pugneys Country Park, near Sandal, Wakefield raising funds for Sports Relief.   People had started to gather in the Buttercross from 8am to cheer on the team - and even the sun shone brightly.   "People gathered from 8am, making jokes with Paul Hudson about him never getting the weather right for Pontefract. It was a wonderful community experience and the church was right at the heart of it, " said Bob.   "It was a privilege to send them off with a prayer and a blessing,' he added.
